Inspiration: Norgdor

Every once in a while, I will post some of the things that inspired my book Day of the Devourer. I’ll start with the first location in the book, Norgdor. Here’s an excerpt:

The desolate white dunes gave way to a valley between two broken, grey mountains ahead. Beyond, he could see a small snow-covered town of dome-shaped houses that spilled down from the ashen stone of the mountains and huddled together for warmth. Smoke rose from some of the roofs and blended into the icy mist that hung in the air.

And later in the same chapter:

For once, Rej stayed silent and frowned through the window at the lights of the ice-covered town. In daylight the place looked foreboding with its grey, dome-topped buildings encrusted in icicles like melting candles. Now the orange glow of its lights against the snow-shrouded mountains felt warm and inviting. Dark clouds moved overhead, and the wind howled. They were in for a snowstorm. In a moment, the shuttle lifted into the air, hovered for a moment, then accelerated into the smoldering sky.

The planet in the story is desolate and lies far away from the more populated areas f the galaxy.

The fact that its climate remained below zero year-round meant the only traders who visited came here in small freighters for the dribble of hydrocarbon fuels it managed to produce for export.

My inspiration for this place originally came from a dream I had of primitive beings wrapped in furs with pack animals who discover a crashed starship on a snowy planet, but I found the images posted here to give it detail and make it more real.
