Inspiration: Hekka

One of the first places Rej visits as he begins to solve the mystery of the Vul and their unknown weapon in Day of the Devourer is the planet Hekka. Sure, it’s a planet of purple-skinned, four-armed aliens, but the inspiration for this setting came from some very real places in Earth’s past… and unfortunately, our present too.

As you read the book, if you’d like to know what Hekka might look like, you don’t have to go much further than searching Google for historical photos of places like Dresden or Berlin in the aftermath of World War II. You can also look at photos of Syria today.

Imagine what your neighborhood or your city or town would look like after a war like this. What would change for good? What would stay the same? How would you learn to live there? Some of us know firsthand and some of us should count our blessings that it’s something we need to imagine.
