Spooky Halloween Excerpts, Part 4

Happy Halloween! Here’s the last of my spooky excerpts from my novel Day of the Devourer. Thaddeus has been having visions that he doesn’t completely understand. Now he finds himself in a place he’s seen in one of those visions, but isn’t quite sure what comes next…

The lights in the Raptor’s cabin flickered, then dimmed. Thaddeus looked up. The glowing bright yellow-white of the recessed lights in the ceiling had faded to a dull, pulsing orange-yellow. The hum of the ship’s auxiliary power had come down an octave or more. In the wee hours of the morning, the ship’s stores of solar power had been depleted and wouldn’t be recharged again for several hours more.

He lay still on the banquette, listening. He didn’t hear them anymore. The scuffling and scratching noises outside had ceased. The quiet felt eerie. In his mind, he kept going over and over a vision he had. He couldn’t remember when he had it. Did it come to him just after the crash, or did he have this vision days ago before he even knew what it could mean? He tried to remember. In the vision, a hideous creature jammed its head into the gash in the side of the ship and ate someone. Who did it eat? He couldn’t see it in his mind. Was it Shady? Maybe it was one of the others. Was it him? Maybe it ate someone, or maybe several gallons of blood suddenly splattered everywhere. He didn’t remember the thing actually eating anyone. Maybe this vision hadn’t come to pass. He didn’t know. He couldn’t trust himself anymore. So, he stayed watchful and wary, but didn’t say anything to Shady.

He looked at the other man, who sat on the floor and peered up at the pulsing lights. Then Shady’s head snapped to the left. Something moved outside, then a loud sniffing sound made them both jump. Another set of footfalls in the dry leaves suggested more than one animal could be stalking them. A scraping sound on the roof of the Raptor made Thaddeus whisper, “I suppose the lights must have been keeping them away all this time.”

Day of the Devourer is available on Amazon and is FREE until Monday, November 1st.
